Wandering Though The Week

I had to stop the car for a turkey rafter crossing. They were in no rush, so I snapped a few shots.

Monday
Sometimes staying at home makes me a bit restless, so I took myself over to Barberville Falls to just have a forest bath - what some eastern cultures refer to as a hike.

The falls are back to their normal flow of water. They were barely a trickle when I was here in the late summer.

My eyes were just happy to see a color that wasn't brown/black/gray.

It's freezing at night even though most days reach the 40's.

I ventured up to the top of the falls to the ruins of an old mill. I wasn't too thrilled to lean against this (precarious?) wall to get a shot down the falls.

Tuesday
I met a friend for lunch and a bit of wandering around Troy. We investigated a maker space called Center of Gravity, and a couple of boutiques.

Wednesday
Wednesday called for temps in the 50's with rain, so in order to meet my challenge, I got a December bike ride in. I rode the Voorheesville to Albany trail and just narrowly avoided the rain showers that were in the area today. 18 miles in an hour and 38 minutes. I was noticing the history along the trail today of the old depot buildings.

The railroad station was built in 1863!

The station is now a picnic pavilion and serves as a trail head parking lot for bikers.

Thursday

A 5 mile hike to the overlooks at Thacher Park with the hiking group. 5.3 miles in 2.5 hours at a very leisurely pace. This escarpment used to be farm land and some of the cars from that era are seen abandoned in the woods.

The Capital District, the Berkshires(MA), the Greens(VT), and Adirondack foothills all visible in the distance. The landscape really doesn't translate well, but I thought the clouds were pretty.

The overlookers.

For the hang gliders who launch themselves into the air from here.

This is at the hang glider launch site, looking back at the first overlook where the first pictures were taken.

Now I plan to curl up on the couch with tea or wine and a good book. I've got Barbara Kingsolver's latest Demon Copperhead ready to read.

  1. Amazing coincidence! I just started reading Demon Copperhead. We chose it as our January book club read and it's long. So far, I like it a lot. Something that I very much loved about NY was the blue sky, much rarer here. We always have the green though. I admire your dedication to exercise. I haven't been as diligent, and it shows. Sigh.
