Changing Times And Changing Seasons

What a quiet and unremarkable week. I took the opportunity to evaluate, plan, and contemplate my home and the coming winter. I have sketched out a rough idea of a basement rearrangement into a Maker Space for myself. Between my tool area, sewing machine, and craft supplies spread all over the house, I think I can consolidate them all into a functional and welcoming space to carry out my projects. We'll see...

My walks are growing rather dull and I look for anything of interest to photograph.

The days are getting so short, by the time I get to walk, the sun is near the horizon.

The wildfire smoke is hazing the sky over the Catskills.

Just an old barn I've passed hundreds of times.

Just when I thought there would be no surprises on this walk, the full moon rose over the lake.

The weather this week was warm enough for a couple of bike rides. Susan and I rode down in Columbia county for a challenging 28 miles in the wind on Monday.

Susan at the Powell Patent in Kinderhook.

Then I went on a solo ride Wednesday before my book club dinner and meeting.

The rail yards in Mechanicville were a nice contrast to the woods and wetlands of the trail.

I stopped for a few minutes to watch cargo containers being
moved around by these rolling cranes.

Even though it was 48 degrees out, a fireplace and ceiling heaters made
the patio at Peggy's place very comfortable.

One great improvement in my life has been coming home from any activity in the cold, and having a soak in the hot tub to warm me to my bones. Whether early or late at night, that is one experience and expense I don't regret at all.
Tonight a few of us are going to a Writers Institute event on Telling The Truth In A Post-Truth World. It is about journalism and the future of both political parties featuring Chuck Todd and other journalists and politicians as well. I'm not sure if I'm ready for this topic, but it should be interesting!

  1. Gosh, that sounds a serious talk! Are patio heaters not very bad for the environment? We worry a lot about this sort of thing here.

    1. The ceiling heaters are radiant electric, so no harmful fumes.

  2. Wow, that full moon shot! I too am running out of interesting items to photograph on my walk. The evergreens don't change much unless they fall down. :( Wildfire smoke this time of year? Yikes. The journalism event sounds fascinating, but it could be totally depressing too.

  3. October and November in NYS had almost no rainfall, so 2 wildfires are still burning. Two days of steady rain (yesterday and today) have helped to contain both fires. I'm both looking forward to and dreading the event!
