Frozen
Thursday, AM - When I woke up today, my weather app indicated it was 5*F, or -15*C and we had an alert for freezing fog. I looked out the window and it looked surreal, with frost coating all of the trees and shrubs and most surfaces. I decided I'd drive to the waterfalls about 6 miles away to take some photos, but as I got a couple of miles from home, there was hardly any frost and the sun was shining through. I realized this was a very localized phenomena, so I turned around and went back to my frozen home. I took a walk down to the lake, but it became clear that my phone camera could not do justice to what I was seeing, so I put the phone away and just decided to take a full 4 mile walk and enjoy the beauty.

Was this deer wondering why I was taking a walk in these freezing temps?
It's been so cold that ice rinks have been shoveled on the lake. It's unusual for the ice to freeze in December.
This was all before I had any coffee or breakfast, so I was famished and freezing when I got home. It was a nice way to start the day though.
Glenn went back to LA, but not before we had a few more fun days together. We saw some Christmas light displays, did some shopping, and enjoyed the hot tub.

I'm a bit sad as we had such a lovely visit, but we made tentative plans to take a trip to Scotland in the coming year so she can see where her ancestors came from. Italy was also on the table, but she has plans for a different trip there.
Friday update - Frozen again. The same confluence of weather, geography, and elevation caused the frost covered spectacle again today.

Not snow, just hoarfrost.
I'm not sure why I'm enchanted by this because it can't be the first time it's happened. As I drove around to various errands this morning and saw how it was not evident off this hill, I felt a little sorry for the people who didn't get to see it.
My cross country ski day has been canceled tomorrow because we're under threat of freezing rain, and Sunday's hike has been postponed because its supposed to rain for 36 hours straight. Winter in the northeast is a real mixed bag!
That's wonderful that you had such a great time with Glenn. I love Scotland! My trip there in 2019 was magical and I got to meet Pam and her lovely family. These photos are stunning! I'm not saying that I would want it that cold with all that hoarfrost but it is like a magical frozen world.
ReplyDeleteThat looks beautiful but slippery! I'm wary of breaking something these days, but good for you. Scotland? We loved meeting Margaret!
