Garden Time

Hundreds of daffodils are blooming in the yard.
A couple of neighbors commented on how nice they look.

Last week I met my friend Dale for lunch and we had a nice chat. She lost her brother in law, then her brother in the month of March which has been so sad for her. We made some plans to visit a botanical garden's plant sale next month and a few other outings.

Afterwards I met Ann Marie for a leisurely bike ride on the Helderburg trail. We caught up as she tends to hibernate all winter for the most part. I organized a 3 day getaway to Cape Cod next month in the same cottage I stayed in last year. Ann Marie, Sue Ellen, and AJ are joining me, and hopefully we'll get in some relaxing beach walking and bike riding.  It is a rambling 4 bedroom cottage just a few steps away from the beach in one direction, and the bike trail in the other.

I finally got some quality time in the garden as the temperatures finally hit the 60's! I'm mostly clearing up beds, and raking leaves, but I did buy some pea gravel to level out the front step that a mouse caused to sink a bit, by building a home underneath. The blocks were so heavy, but I managed to move them, add gravel, then replace them. I sustained a few cuts and a smashed finger, but nothing too serious.

The daffodils have put on a nice display and the azaleas are not far behind. I've already noted which clumps are ready to be divided up to expand the display for next year.

I've never attempted to keep a jasmine plant before, but I couldn't resist the perfume
of its flowers at the greenhouse. We'll see if I can nurture it.

My sister came to visit for a few days in which we chatted endlessly about many topics. We didn't do much in the way of entertainment but we did poke around Albany a bit and went to the best greenhouse. We had dinner at a Moroccan restaurant, then watched the latest episode of The Handmaid's Tale. Her daughter took the bus up from NYC since she was going to spend Easter weekend at home. I got to visit with her and make her pumpkin pancakes before they set off back home.

The Earth Boxes need a little cleaning up before I plant in them.

My sister brought me four surplus Earth Boxes to use as my vegetable garden this summer. They have hard water stains, but I'll clean them up and plant a decent selection of vegetables in them.

One mostly cleaned up and ready for planting.

Saturday I went to my 3rd protest rally and met up with some friends in the hiking group. Rain poured down on my drive into Albany but by the time I parked, it had stopped and remained clear for the rally. Several members of our group, including me, made it into the local TV news.

Our intrepid group of hikers and protesters.

The signage just keeps getting more creative.

Another good sign.

After the rally I had a few hours before the next rainstorm, so I spent it raking up leaves and pine cones, bagging the debris, and chatting with my neighbors. Once the weather warms up we all come out to enjoy the lovely outdoors.

  1. Daffodils are very cheerful; I'm happy that spring has arrived although my back hurts hearing about all your work and lifting. After tweaking my back a few times, I'm hesitant about moving anything too heavy. I love your get away plans; beach and biking are perfect!
