So Much Rain

What a wet week it's been. I have lost track, but I think it has rained for four days in a row. I don't know how many inches fell, but the only part of the lawn that wasn't a swamp was the sloped section behind the wall. I managed to get out before dark and get that section mowed. I've taken a walk each day, with an umbrella which I have never needed before this week. At least we aren't in a drought anymore.

I watched the birds from my deck hunting for food including this Eastern Bluebird, our state bird.

Tuesday I checked the radar and there was a 2-3 hour window between storms. I shot over to the Pine Bush as the only place guaranteed to be dry (it's dune sand) and had a 4.5 mile nature walk. I took my 35 mm camera in case I found anything worth a shot. It turned out to be only a 1.5 hour window because I got rained on for the last couple of miles.

The path through the woods looks quite boring until you take a closer look
at things.

The lupines have just started to bloom which will bring the Karner Blue Butterflies. It's Lupine Fest at the preserve, so I'll have to return to see the butterflies next week.

The only butterfly I saw was this Duskywings.

I think these might be Lady Slippers, but I couldn't find one open to know for sure. Maybe I'll go back in a couple of days to find out.

A Roufus Sided Towhee was scratching about in the leaves looking for bugs to eat.

I could only see a couple of silent frogs in the pond that was so loud with hundreds of frogs last month.

My trusty Chromebook has stopped charging so I'm letting it go. I have three other computers to use, so it's not a big loss. It was the computer I used to load photos onto my blog so I'm adjusting to a more cumbersome process since my MacBooks are locked up tight, security wise.

After a morning of gardening which included digging up and disposing of a small tree, I took a quiet walk down by the lake. I have never seen a pileated woodpecker fly and land so close to me, but it was very interested in pecking the insects out of the stump.

It was the size of a chicken!

I'm meeting some friends for a bike ride tomorrow, then going to a plant sale at a botanical garden on Friday when it will be raining again.

Comments

  1. I like rain but not constant. Although people think it's always rainy or gray here, it's really not and those of us who love that kind of weather appreciate mother nature watering our plants and lawns. :) I often walk with an umbrella and not a drop of rain falls on me. Better safe than sorry, eh?

  2. I biked and hiked in the rain today - it's becoming normal!

  3. It hasn't rained here for weeks (in Edinburgh), which is most unusual for this time of year. The earth is like dust. However, we've been enjoying beautiful blue skies.
