Feels Like Summer

10/2/25  I made my sore legs hike again, this time a not so ambitious Alander Mountain at only 1300 ft of elevation. It was a lovely and pain free hike, with a dinner stop at the Martindale Diner.

The Alander hiking group. I'm tired of photos where everyone is staring at the camera - so I'm
staring off into the distance.

Behind me, down in the valley, is the Harlem Valley bike trail I rode with my sister last week.

10/3/25  Friday morning Peggy, Charlene, Jill, and I set off for the Olympic Center at Mt Van Hovenberg to volunteer at the Whoop! Mountain Bike Racing weekend in Lake Placid.

A drone shot of the race course.

Peggy and I got assigned to the VIP room where we were just bouncers, making sure anyone entering had a VIP credential. The first couple of hours were incredibly boring, but then the racing started right off the balcony of our station. It was very cool to watch the racers on the track below, but then also see the track on the big screen at the end of the room.

I took this picture off the balcony.
That is Pitchoff mountain in the background - the site of my big leap last October.

As volunteers, we were given vouchers for lunch and dinner as well as a ski pass for use this winter. I'll definitely do it a couple more times for the ski passes alone. Going up with a group is fun too.

The volunteer shuttle did not show up, so Charlene and I hopped on a golf cart. Jill and Peggy were in the car behind us and took this picture.

10/4/25  Saturday was a zero day, in which the car did not leave the garage. I went for a walk, painted the new decking, mowed the front lawn, and moved all the furniture back onto the patio. It feels good to take care of all the little jobs that have been waiting.

The reconfigured deck.

The finished product. I'm so relieved the hot tub access panel is now accessible!

Peggy upgraded to new skis so she gifted me her old pair which are really nice.
I can't wait to get back into downhill skiing.
For about 10 years I was a ski club chaperone and went every week.
When my daughter was born, I gave up skiing.

A busy honey bee on the anemone. The temperatures have reached the 80's
the past 3 days. Rain tomorrow though.

My neighbors have been slowly adding to their Halloween decor since Sept 1, to the point you see below. There are still three weeks to go so there is no telling how elaborate this 'display' will get.

If I could post a video, you would see the animated ghosts and hear the spooky sound effects.
All I know is it's past 10 pm, my windows are open and I can hear the sound effects. Not cool.

  1. That house is quite something! John's neighbor is like that too although he has huge skeletons and other gigantic and scary figures. How wonderful to have new gear for downhill skiing! I'm tempted to take it back up although John wouldn't be at all interested. I used to love it! I'm inspired by your hiking. There are so many great trails around here that I'm missing out on.

  2. Oh good grief, those decorations! No one decorates for Hallowe'en here, or only on the day, with a plastic ghost in the window or a pumpkin or two. Your deck looks great, but 80 degrees at this time of year??
