Tuesday - I took my girl to the airport this morning and said goodbye. Her two week visit passed much too quickly and I miss her.
We are in for 3 days of rain which I am glad for, as it's been a bit too warm and dry and I have crops growing! I just appreciate the break from watering each morning.
Once the compass was installed, I could see that the gladiolas were too tall and I needed shorter plants so as not to obscure the direction stones. I moved them out and added calendula which was not growing well in a shady area. I hope they will take off in this area and complement the zinnias and nasturtiums. I replaced the mulch under the triangles of rounded stones with pea gravel which sets them off better. I'll be looking out for larger direction stones on my hikes as the ones I have are on the small side.

Wednesday - I really need to be careful what I wish for. Just 18 hours ago I told my sister that the rain hadn't started yet. I was woken up an hour ago by my phone blaring a flash flood warning. Over four inches of rain has fallen overnight and it's still coming down hard in a narrow band over my county.
 |
| I went out to unblock the storm drains of grass and rock so they could keep up with the water. |
 |
| I took a walk down the road to the bottom of my hill to see the lake. This road was completely flooded. |
 |
| Someone's canoe got away. |
 |
| It is amazing how much material fast running water can move. |
Today was supposed to be an inside day, but I couldn't resist the urge to see what the storm was doing. My town has been declared an emergency, roads are closed, and most businesses are closing too. Last I heard 6" - 9" of rain since last night and it is still pouring. My phone alarm has gone off four times so far, causing my heart to stop for a moment and me to jump out of my skin. I should probably lower the volume.
Thursday - The official rainfall total for a town 14 miles away is 11.75" of rain. They are getting all the attention because the flooding is catastrophic being right next to the Hudson River where 2 streams empty into it. I'm guessing my town was in the vicinity of 9 to 10 inches.
In any case, the plants are well watered and I'm heading up to Lake Placid with Peggy for a day of volunteering.
Such extremes! That flooding so quickly is frightening. We're supposed to get rain this weekend; we'll see if it shows up. My poor lawn is looking parched. It's hard to say goodbye when we've had a great visit with someone; people always told me when my daughters lived far away, "Oh, at least there's FaceTime/Skype/Zoom!" But it's not the same at all. Be careful out there, as they used to say on Hill Street Blues.
