$hift Happens

 4/5/22

I'm typing one handed today because I did myself an injury. I was chopping cabbage with the mandoline and rather than use the hand guard, I determined the cabbage too large and myself too nimble to need it. I was very wrong. I neatly sliced off the end of my thumb, nearly fainted, and couldn't stop the bleeding. So after layng down with my hand raised, pondering my predicament, I decided to go to Urgent Care and let the professionals handle it. They did, and my thumb is now healing in a metal and gauze thumb cosy and a tetanus booster is coursing through my veins. I gave up all hope of getting things done and took to the couch for the rest of the day. It looks like my left hand is going to get to do daily chores solo  for a few days and let my more proficient right hand rest. Sounds fun.

Well, I managed to get the kitchen cleaned - thanks to the dish washer. I did get out on a neighborhood walk which caused my thumb to throb, so I cut it short at just 2 miles.

The first skunk cabbage I've seen this year down by the lake.

I got ambitious and threw a load of laundry in the clothes washer which promptly died. With a full load of soaking clothes inside. And no way to wring them out with the thumb situation. What next? A call to the appliance repair store, that's what.

So, appliance repair tech will be here next Weds, but I am heading to Mom's for the weekend so I won't worry too much about laundry. In the meantime, I had a full load of soaking wet clothes to deal with. I lugged them up to the kitchen sink, rinsed them, and attempted to wring them out with one good hand and one with no (useful) opposable thumb. They are too wet to go in the dryer as I'll burn that motor up if I try. So I turned up the heat and they are on racks drying.

Fun couple of days!

  1. Oh, dear on the thumb. That's a huge fear of mine. I'm not good with knives at all. Hope it will soon be usable. We don't realize how much we depend on both hands!

  2. It's been enlightening how important the opposable thumb is. I get so much negative feedback every time I accidentally use it.
