Changing Climates

It's November and I'm still pulling produce from the garden! I thought the arugula was done two weeks ago, but the weather has encouraged more growth so I picked another 2-3 salads worth, once I added in the baby kale which is still going strong.

Outdoor greens the critters seem to ignore - more for me.

The indoor garden has had a decent start, but no comparison to outdoors. I will keep it up though, because I've invested quite a bit into it and I imagine it will make me happy in the dead of winter.

Arugula and spinach under the lights - healthy but not as large as I'd hoped.

Now these carrots, which I don't love, are another matter. I've started pulling them knowing I've got to process them, but I'm not sure in what form: carrot soup, just frozen rounds, carrot cake?

So many carrots! This is about 1/10 of the crop.

Back in mid October I noticed one clump of iris was sending up buds but due to the late date I didn't give them much hope. Well, last week I cut the stalks and two days later - blooms.

Confused iris?

The elections are now over, the votes still being tallied, but the GOP did not perform as they hoped - thank God! My faith in our country is not completely gone, just shaken. Maybe we are coming back to the foundations of democracy (dare I hope?).

I had dinner with a friend last night which was so-so on all fronts, and I'm off to do a 30+ mile bike ride today with another. It looks like 2 more days of seasonable weather before the cold November winds take over. I am so glad to get outside and take advantage.

Tomorrow its back to the tile store with Ken the builder this time. He was less than impressed with my tile choices and wants to show me some other options. That is fine with me as I did pick the most neutral and sedate tiles in the store. When I'm not inspired I tend to go the safe route and my 'vision' is limited. The project is definitely on the slow track which is fine with me - perhaps the rest of Auntie's inheritance will come through in the meantime to pay for it. For all of her foibles, she was an amazing saver and left her 8 nieces and nephews with a ridiculously large amount of capital. She did teach me two things - 1) be generous when you have the means to be and 2) enjoy it before you are gone.

  1. Wow, that's a lot of carrots. I'm not a huge fan of them (prefer them cooked or in soups) and they're so hard to clean. So-so? Do tell. I like my neutral tile since I have rather busy granite and backsplash. Plus, I love colorful towels!
