Renovation!

This past weekend I started harvesting what I could from my veggie garden: a mass of basil, 2 delicata squash, a few undersized beets and kohlrabi, and a bunch of tiny carrots. I also took down the raised beds in preparation for deck demolition and patio install. I obsessed for a few hours about where to place the veggie garden for next year, but based on the paltry harvest, I think I won't have a vegetable garden at all. My neighbor's son and his partner started a farm a couple of miles away so I'll just support that endeavor, and work on my flower garden. Giving something like that up will be an experiment to see if I really miss it, or just plant it because it's there.

This is the before picture. I'm keeping the upper roofed deck. The lower section of deck, I just don't use and the wood is badly weather beaten. The deck roof side panel really needs a coat of paint, or three.

I began my part of the project by painting the side panel of the deck roof. I knew my ladder
would not reach it if I waited until the patio was done, so that was Sunday's project.

Today the lower deck was demolished and the digging for the patio is halfway done. The project should take 2-4 weeks.

The bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds are all over the flower garden on the side of the house.

On my neighborhood walks, I always look for something new and interesting to see as I've walked these roads hundreds of times. I've learned that there is always something new.

This tiny pond was fully covered in green pond scum and I almost
missed the turtles as they just looked like rocks.

This wasp nest was constructed in just a couple of weeks time on the bank of the
roadside. I've seen them in trees or completely underground; this was a little of both.

Three little fawns were crossing my driveway one morning, their little hooves tip tapping
on the asphalt. The third one didn't make it in the shot as it startled and ran off.

I'm off to play pickleball tomorrow morning and possibly bike ride for a bit. The weather has returned to 70's with quite a few rain showers - perfect for me.

  1. I feel the same as you about my neighborhood walks; there is always something new to see! I also gave up on growing edible stuff because it was time and water intensive, and the "crop" wasn't usually worth it. Love the fawns and the weather. Ours is similar right now minus the rain.

  2. Ooh, in the 70s I'm cowering inside in the shade! Your patio project looks interesting.
