Keeping Busy

I have dabbled in composting for over 30 years, and never felt really satisfied in it. The scraps pile up, and have to be turned, etc... My best method so far was to buy an old blender at Goodwill, blend up my kitchen scraps with water, then just dig a hole and dump it in. The only problem is that digging in winter can't happen, and the blender motor gave out. I have so much garden and kitchen debris that I decided to buy a tumbling composter. After researching many models, the Black and Decker composter was high on every list, and on sale. So another attempt at being a master composter begins.

I found the box deposited on the bricks, so it being happy hour,
I poured myself a glass of wine and got to it.

So many boxes and parts! I'm not sure if the wine helped the construction
process, but I was at least very chill and relaxed about it!

A flat packed barrel took shape. The instructions said 2 people are needed
to put this together, but they don't know me. No help required.

Success! This is its winter home right outside the garage door.
I may move it away from the house next spring.

A couple of friends and I were up in the mountains for a few days to have fun, but also to take part in One Square Mile Of Hope. We met up with a couple thousand like minded people to form a raft of kayaks. It was so much more fun than it sounded like it would be.

Susan, me, Amyjean, and Nancy. We ran into Nancy in the parking lot -
she drove up in the morning as a last minute entrant.

Getting in place.

Paddles up!

The kayak raft!  Amyjean searched the overhead shot and found us!

From our dock at night.

Drone shot of sunset over Old Forge and First Lake.

Fall is in the air.

On my way home, I made a stop at Thirteenth Lake which I've wanted to kayak for several years. Today was the day and it was perfect weather for it. It was quite a difference from kayaking with over 2000 people yesterday, to a solo kayak today.

Very peaceful with just a few ripples on the whole lake.

The pair of loons were not too shy.

I'm so glad I stopped for an hour when I was tempted to just keep driving home.

Now it's back to reality. I backed out of a hike today (too hot at 80 F) and the lawn needs mowing and a few hundred other chores are waiting. I also love a quiet day at home.

Comments

  1. I needed to mow my lawn too--due to rain, it had gotten quite long. Love the impressive kayak photo and the other beautiful views. I've never composted but my older daughter is very into it.

  2. I just have a compost heap but it's in a shady bit, hidden away, so it never really gets hot enough (also we never get 80 degrees). It does rot down eventually though. I have toyed with the idea of a tumbling composter but then I think, oh, it's just something else for the kids to get rid of when we die. Always the optimist! Your kayaking sounds/looks great, but that's something else I've left it too late to start...
