Wintering Green

It's been a full week of socializing and I am looking forward to a few days on my own. The weather coming up for the weekend looks bleak - highs in the low single digits and negative lows. I'm glad I got my skiing in Tuesday when the temp was 16°F - so balmy!

I'm in the middle - not a bit of skin exposed - and the skiing was great!

Wednesday Peggy and Rich came over so we could plan the X-Country ski trip for 2027 - that is if any country will have us. I made a batch of blueberry lemon scones to have with our coffee. We've decided on Chamonix, FR as the location and are looking into hotels, transport, etc...

Afterwards I started a pot of Creamy Lasagna Soup I saw in The New York Times and I have to say - it did not disappoint. A savory and bright soup full of sausage, mushrooms and spinach - perfect for a cozy winter day.

A shot of lemon before serving it was perfect! It was even better on day 2.

I hope to get my taxes (mostly) done in the next few days.

A few days later - I did get most of my taxes done, but will have to wait a few more days for the official numbers to arrive. I really hate paying taxes for the current administration to use my hard earned money to erode democracy, perpetuate hate, and turn this country into an international pariah. GRRR.
When I get so angry at the state of our country, I need to do something. So today I called my congressional reps and left messages of support, I increased my recurrent donation to SecureActBlue, and I left a message at the White House. That last act got me spam texts which I immediately reported; it also let me know that no one actually read my admonishment, typical for this administration. My heart truly aches for my country.

I donated some things to the Thrift Store Friday, but came home with these leftover dishes.

My friend Dale gave me an amaryllis with curly willow branches as accents. Well, now the curly willow is flowering and leafing out to make a whole new house plant.

I met Dale and Janice for lunch Saturday at a cafe that was just bursting with
plants and it made me very happy to sit amongst the greenery.

After lunch, I decided to continue the green theme and headed to Faddegon's which
has 3 green houses full of plants. The impending storm made me seek out living greenery before being confined at home for 24+ hours. This tiny unusual orchid was so pretty.

I just walked among the plants admiring them all, and finally decided to buy a Christmas cactus just because it was all budded up and about to flower. Now to pot it up and add it to my little indoor garden.

The salad greens and a few other plants I'm growing inside.

It is now Sunday morning and the snow has finally started to fall. We are supposed to see 1-2 feet of snow with this storm. I will be out with the little snow plow at least 3-4 times to keep ahead of the pileup. I also bought the makings for a pot of broccoli cheddar soup so that will keep me busy.

The first hour of the storm with just a dusting of snow.
I'm going to take a picture each time I head out to plow.

  1. It sounds like soup weather! I love the lasagne soup out of the can (Progresso) and home made would be even better. Although broccoli (or anything in the cabbage family) isn't kind to my gut, I would definitely eat that one too. I wish I could grow indoor plants; I can also blame it on the nibbling habit of the cat!
