September!

 

Bean flowers are quite pretty!

I'm about to head off on a late summer getaway up in the mountains. We will have bikes and kayaks and lots of evening activities to fill the four days. It will be a fun time even if it rains a bit on Weds. as predicted.

I've taken a few bike rides, worked on putting certain garden plants to bed, while picking absolute boatloads of green beans. My freezer is stocked with them and I'm kind of tired of eating them, no matter how fresh and tender they are. My second crop of beans are about ready to pick - what was I thinking?

I haven't been taking too many pictures, but I'll let these tell the tale of my week.

A bike ride with friends ended with lunch at the quaint Window Box cafe. 

They bake their breads on premises and the sconewich I had was scrumptious.


Amyjean outdid herself with her butterfly cake for our book club lunch.
Flight Behavior by Kingsolver was the subject of our discussion. 

All of my monarchs have emerged and flown, but there are loads of caterpillars in the garden.
Judging by their size, they are doing just fine.

I drove over to Adams, MA for a solo bike ride and stopped in at the visitors center. 
They have a fun historical look at the ski industry in the area.
This outfit was 100% wool; it must have been so heavy!

It was another gorgeous summer day to be out on the trail.

It was a bit windier than I like, but much of the trail is a long green tunnel which
shielded me from the worst wind gusts.

Making granola has been on my mind, so I looked up a recipe and made a batch of mango coconut granola. It turned out great and will top my greek yogurt for breakfasts on my trip. The best part - no preservatives or other not so healthy additives.

My neighbor Annette, let me know her 96 year old Mom passed away this weekend. She knew it was coming but still came over to talk and process all the feelings. This morning I bought a hibiscus plant and a card and dropped it off. On the way back to my house I stopped to talk with another neighbor, Maggie, and found out we are both fans of Gardener's World. Then I helped her pick her plums which she had been neglecting. She rewarded me with a few of them. They are tiny but so sweet!

Now I'm off to run a few errands and pack up for the trip to the mountains!

    I would happily take some green beans off your hands, if only I lived closer! I love granola; I discovered granola with yogurt was a tasty breakfast in Ireland. I don't like Greek yogurt here but theirs was creamy and didn't taste like paste. What beautiful weather! We're having some too although today started out cloudy. Enjoy your trip to the mountains!

 The (almost too) large book club was held in the meeting room of a library. It worked out well as we were able to thoroughly discuss two books in our allotted time. The point of changing the venue was that meetings were becoming too food/social focused and too light on book discussion. Wrapping up a successful book club meeting on a rainy night. The faction pushing for more food and drink are also the ones bringing +1’s and not actually reading the books. This venue change is helping. If they want a social gathering, then why not just host one, rather than co-opting book group? Birds And Surgery

 12/5/25 This robin looks a bit disgusted with the weather! My previous post of the 10 day weather turned out to be a bit inaccurate as usual. This morning's low was -2°F. A very chilly start to the day as evidenced by the nonstop birds getting all the suet they can. I was happy to see a red bellied woodpecker, along with the usual smaller ones. I can't get good photos of the birds because the deck is backlit by the sunny yard, and in shadow, so the photo below is one I took out my classroom window when I had my classes involved in Cornell's Project Feederwatch about 10 years ago.  Red bellied woodpecker Yesterday's surgery was interesting. I thought my eardrum was just going to be disconnected from a bone it was lying against. When the Dr tried that, it caused the eardrum to tear irreparably. He also noted the bone was damaged. California!

 My week in Cali is over - it went so fast!  My heart is full from spending a week with my girl. There was a beach below the condo where we took daily walks. The moon was in the 3rd quarter stage, so the tides were neap. The low was not very low, the high not so high. I still collected too many rocks for my garden. I took a solo trip to another beach while daughter worked one day. California is beautiful, but the constant traffic does not make a relaxing atmosphere. There is an osprey in the tree on the bluff. There was one rainy day, but daughter was working and I was reading to finish a rather long book for book club.  I got out for a beach walk before the rain rolled in.  My daughter and I enjoyed many chats, beach walks, and movies at night. We went to the San Diego Wild Safari Park and petted a wallaby, went on a Behind The Scenes Tour and had a fun, but hot and tiring day. I can see why they sell multi-day tickets.
