Mid October Life

Thursday 10/12/23

Sheila, Geri and I got together to be tourists and visit the Mansion at Clermont and walk the grounds. It was a beautiful day and the history kept my interest. Afterwards we stopped for lunch at the Maker Cafe in Hudson. It was on the pricey side but very good. Then we stopped at Golden Harvest Farm for produce and apple cider donuts of course.

Clermont house, home of the Livingstons for 7 generations.

The library where the family could let their hair down, as counterpoint to the more formal rooms in the house.

On our 4 mile walk of the grounds - Ruins of an earlier home (Arryle House) destroyed by the British, rebuilt, but later burned by accident.

I have grown fond of my solo bike rides because I can go as far as I want and at my own pace. I decided to drive over to Adams Massachusets to ride one of my favorite trails, the Ashuwillticook. It was chilly but I managed a decent pace and had my lunch along the way. I also brought a White Claw to enjoy in the park at the end.
Ashuwillticook Rail Trail on the Cheshire reservior.

There were very few colorful trees.

Sunday 10/15/23
Just a walk around town and an impromptu rain which soaked me a bit!
On my walk by the lake I found a rare autumn gem.

The weather has been a bit dismal and cloudy but I managed to get a short ride in today before getting ready for the RPA Gala tonight. It was a great success and I got to bring friends Annette, Susan, and Amyjean with me. I sat with one of my daughters friends from high school as she now works for the RPA. It was nice getting to know her and the other folks at our table.

10/18/23

Today seemed like a good day to mow the lawn (again) and then I got into gardening - cleanup and planting some of the 150 bulbs I've been buying. Daffodils and crocus only, because the deer consider tulips their food. I think I pulled up 1000 tiny Rose of Sharon seedings and trimmed the 2 plants to within and inch of their lives. It was a very satisfying day.

Relaxing by the fire after 4 hrs of hard work.

  1. I always preferred to run by myself too--for the same reasons that you like the solitary bike rides. Those are beautiful photos of you all dressed up. I can't remember the last time I did so. That tree is gorgeous! We have a few like that around here, but not many. The Evergreen State has many evergreens. :)
