 10/20/23  At home:

I was digging a hole to plant daffodil bulbs and dug up this beautiful stone.
It was like getting a present. It is perfect for my 'art installation'.

10/22/23  In Corning:  A cold and blustery few days in Corning. I really needed a walk. My youngest sister and her husband are in Portugal; my brother is in Florida, and 2 sisters are sick. I decided to spend 4 days with mom so she is not on her own. Her home aide will be there for the rest of the week until everyone else returns.

I walked two villages over and took a closer look at Painted Post's folly.

This is a reminder of greed and short sightedness. These water pumps were put in to draw millions of gallons from the aquifer that supplies nearby communities as well as this one. It was to be sold to oil fracking wells just a few miles down the rail line in Pennsylvania. Thankfully concerned citizens and the judge had the intelligence to put a stop to it before even a drop was drawn. This never used filling station sits as a reminder not to be foolish. The ill conceived plan would have left the whole area without water resources within months.

I've passed by this graveyard hundreds of times. Today I went in.
The graves are from the late 1700's to about 1940's.  Most women are only listed by their first names, as the wife of some man with a surname.

A beautiful tree mushroom.

The park was raining hickory nuts due to the wind. I collected a few but only one was edible.
This is one of the dozen shag bark hickory trees.

I wanted to see the giant pumpkin that was growing near the trail this summer, but the garden was completely mowed over. I walked to the front of the house to see if it was there - it was!

Monday 10/22/23

I asked my sister to take a walk with me as the wind died down and the sun was shining.
On the bridge we saw the carp swimming below.

We stopped for hot mulled cider and enjoyed it outside at The Soulful Cup.

10/25/23

Back at home I pulled myself out of bed to meet Susan and Ann Marie for a bike ride from Lake George to Glens Falls. We are getting a nice stretch of nice 70 degree weather so we were taking advantage. Susan and I stopped at the Log Jam for soup afterwards. When I got home I had time to plant the last of the daffodils and now I want to get some more. I'm giving myself a treat come spring when the beds will be full of flowers when I'll need them most.

  1. Wonderful to plant bulbs this time of year, then wait for them to come up in the spring. I have tulips! Love that stone--it looks like it's already been polished. It's definitely time for hot drinks although I'm more of a coffee drinker. (or hot chocolate!)

  2. That stone definitely doesn't look natural! How odd. And how impressive your cycling is. Good for you!

  3. This part of the country was covered by glaciers 10,000 yrs ago so there are loads of stream rounded stones all over the place. I had to wash it off which is why its wet and shiny.
