Signs Of Spring

The critters are out and about again.

A walk along the Mohawk with Susan, AJ, Sheila, and Esther, followed by lunch at Panera.

Very slow progress at the town beach renovation project.

Progress is slow, but work is getting done.

Just the usual walks along the river, on the Tech Park trails or in the neighborhood are keeping me active and fit. The weather has suddenly changed to spring like temps in the 60's so I even took a bike ride on the Rail Trail yesterday. Annette and I hiked in the Tech Park and were amazed at the damage from the ice storm. Natures' pruning just produces a different habitat for the forest creatures.

All the precipitation has flooded part of the trail. We found a way around the new lake.

Lots of downed trees and limbs littered the trail.

Signs of spring!

I really wasn't interested in driving up to the Adirondacks into the totality of the eclipse, so I was fine with 98%. The sky was covered with light clouds, but I was able to see the eclipse with the viewing glasses. While a very cool phenomena, I find it underwhelming. Maybe because I taught this in Earth Science class for so many years and find the tides, moon phases, and planet motions even more interesting than eclipses. I certainly understand and value the social aspects of making this a fun event to gather and celebrate together, but I really don't like crowds, so elected not to join the totality party up in the Adirondacks. I probably should have made the effort, but I just wasn't motivated.

On the way home from a hike I stopped in Troy for a little shopping. I found two tops
and admired the architecture.

This past weekend I spent in Connecticut visiting my sister and brother in law. We met in Millerton NY and were planning to ride on the bike trail, but the wind was high and chilly, so we walked 5 miles instead. Of course it started to rain, so we got soaked but laughed about the inaccuracy of weather forecasts.

Saturday was a bit brighter so we went to a nearby Park for a hike to a waterfall. In what was turning into a theme, we got a bit wet towards the end as it started to rain.

At the falls.

Theresa and Bruce at Paugussett Lake State Park

My sun hats were delivered so I can avoid the sun on all my adventures.
On this day it served as a good rain hat.

Afterwards, Theresa and I opened some wine and played our first Scrabble game without Mom. I was worried it might be too emotional, but it was just fun and we did a bit of remembering fun and raucous games with Mom.

Sunday we headed to Litchfield CT to White Flower Farm where we walked in the gardens, shops, and greenhouses gathering ideas for our yards. Of course, the radar showed some rain coming in so we shopped a bit in town, then headed back to Millerton, determined to get our bike ride in. We rode for 16 miles with on and off rain the whole way. It didn't phase us one bit because we knew enough to just wear our rain jackets and enjoy!

The trees were enormous and beautiful at White Flower Farm.

On the Harlem Valley Bike Trail we saw these swans  among the throngs of Canadian geese and mallards.

  1. Love the signs of spring, even the dandelions. It sounds like you're getting out and about and doing many activities; good for you! What do you think of Panera? I've been underwhelmed (great word!) by it the last few times I've gone. Perhaps I'm misordering? The color of that trillium, wow!
