March Musings

Changeable weather is finally here and hints of spring appear here and there. I am growing very bored with my walks around the lake, but I have never seen the ice last so long into March.

This is March 8th and its frozen solid.

I heard sirens the night before and saw smoke with the glow of flames down by the lake. This house had a very unfortunate fire. Luckily no one was hurt but the house is a total loss.

On the 9th I decided to drive to town, park the car, and walk into Troy for a change of scenery.

This beautiful building has been converted into apartments.

The east side has quite a few Victorian(? )houses that now serve as Frat houses for RPI.

This is the Emma Willard School where my daughter spent a year and a half in preschool.
I stopped at a little shop I drove past hundreds of times but never noticed before. I bought some lotion, soap, and chocolate!

Monday 3/10 was a blank on my calendar so I set off to the Berkshire Botanical Garden in Mass. to see their bulb show. I appreciated the many varieties they planted, many of which I've never seen before.

This greenhouse was the whole show, so after about 20 minutes, I needed  another activity
to make the trip worthwhile.

I put my bike in my car in case biking was an option, but this was the condition of the Rail Trail.
I found a section that was clear and took a walk, then visited a Thrift Shop, and Guido's Grocery
where I picked up lunch which I ate at a ski slope I passed on my way home.

I had a cross country ski outing planned for the day on 3/11, but since the temperature rose to 70, it was cancelled and a few of us decided to bike ride instead.

I met Geri, Peggy, and Hassan at Lions Park on the Mohawk River. I got there early with a coffee to enjoy the warmth and the park with the old depot building.

We decided 20 miles was a nice distance to break in our biking muscles. The ice
is breaking up and the canal authority is doing their best to keep it moving so
the river won't flood.

Cohoes Falls was in full flood which delighted Peggy and Hassan who had never seen the falls.

Our view from the top of the falls.

In more domestic activity, I am installing a grab bar near the hot tub, I've planted lots
of seeds for my flower gardens, and I've taken up a needle and thread!

My favorite Smartwool shirt developed a hole. I called the company about it, but since I bought it at Eastern Mountain Sports, they were not willing to do anything about it. I have never embroidered before, but this is an $80 shirt, so a few Youtube videos gave me confidence.I sketched a leaf pattern to cover the hole.

It's not great, but I will wear my leaf shirt with pride for another season!

Even though we've had a few days of warmish weather, the lake is still frozen over but with some thawing on the edges. I'm now interested in how long it will last. This is March 12.

Fourteen years ago I was at the San Francisco Geologic Office during the tsunami. I really miss my lush thick hair and eyebrows! The science part was fun too.

  1. You keep very busy and I like how you find interesting and varied activities. I'm not very good at that!
