The Big Melt

 3/14/25

Spring has arrived and we are determined to not miss a bit of it. A few of us planned a 23 mile bike ride today, but we had to wait until noon for the temperatures to hit 50 degrees. It was a beautiful ride with sunny skies and the temperatures topped out at 63 degrees.

We stopped for lunch at the farm store and ate in the greenhouse. Me, Charlene, Geri, and SueEllen. I felt quite old when the cashier recognized me as her 8th grade science teacher. We chatted for a bit, then I asked about her mother, who I also taught at the beginning of my career. We may be of a certain age, but we are still out on 23 mile bike rides and other adventures!

If I could have managed carrying it on my bike, I would have bought a cyclemen or two.

The ice is still holding on at 11am.

It's melting! This was about 4 pm. The lake should be ready for kayaking by the end of the weekend.

After puttering in the garden for a bit, I drove to meet Lyne for a bike ride. We were prepared to turn it into a walk since the winds were a steady 18 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph.  After we set off, it wasn't bad because we were shielded by trees for much of the way - and it was sunny. The St Patrick's Day pub crawl was at its height when we reached Amsterdam so there weren't many choices for lunch. We just had an energy bar at a park and headed back. We rode 32 miles which was 10 more than we intended.

This half mile section was still iced up so we had to walk our bikes.

The Mohawk River park where we ate our sad lunch - an energy bar. After the long ride we went to a restaurant for dinner. The hostess took one look at us and claimed they had no tables without a reservation, and sent us to the bar. We had a delicious dinner of scallops and lemon risotto while chatting with the bartender. The tables in the restaurant never filled up, but we just laughed at how our bike riding attire wasn't really appreciated by the restaurant.

For my first week of biking, I rode 82 miles which was probably too much, too soon. My undercarriage is quite tender and sore, so I'll stay off the bike for a few days. 😬

A drive by the lake showed it was still frozen on Sunday.

The crocus have bloomed and the daffodils are just coming out of the ground.

In honor of St. Patrick's Day, Irish music at the Adelphi Hotel in Saratoga was our place for lunch on Monday. I had a nice shepard's pie and a Guinness.

The lake is finally free of ice and ready for a paddle!

  1. Wow, what a change in the weather! My undercarriage hurts just thinking of all those miles biking. I think the longest John and I have gone was 20 sometime miles and I could barely get off the bike at the end. LOL I decided to retire when students were telling me that I had their parents in class too. Yikes.
