Extreme Freeze Weekend - Again

2/8/26

I’m so tired of freezing cold weather. We are dipping back into negative readings for the next two days, so I’ll be home keeping warm. Thankfully I went skiing at Gore Mountain yesterday and had a great day! I skied from 9 am to 1 pm straight and my legs got quite a workout. This mountain is at least twice as high as Mohawk in CT so each run takes about 30 minutes. I was so proud of myself and my improvements!

I took two lifts to the top of the mountain for the first time ever! It was gorgeous up there - like a
winter wonderland.

We had après ski drinks in the lodge and this is the view of the lower mountain.

I seem to have developed sniffly nose which I hope won’t turn out to be a cold. I'll be drinking green tea to try to head off any infection.

It looks like a blizzard with snow and gusty winds blowing it all over the place.
I put out some extra bird seed because I feel so badly for the birds.

I think it snowed about 3 inches overnight, but it's hard to tell with all the blowing and drifting snow. By Sunday morning I got out to shovel the driveway at -8° F. The good news is the ten day forecast shows a whole string of days with 30°+ days ahead - a heat wave!

Hope is in sight! It will probably hit 30 today, but not 32 for a few more days. I even see a 40 in the forecast next week. I'm meeting a friend for a walk today but we're expecting snow later so we'll have to watch the skies. I finished reading Project Hail Mary by AndyWeir for the 2nd time, and thoroughly enjoyed it again. I checked out Remarkably Bright Creatures, which has been on my list for a while. I'm passing these cold days of winter with books!

Me and Ann Marie at the Pine Bush Preserve. We opted for snow shoes as the big snow from two weeks ago hasn't had a chance to melt yet.

I don't volunteer here anymore, but it's nice for a quick walk in the woods.
We ended our walk with lunch at a pub.

These residents are often in the yards around home. They are having a rough winter and are snacking hard on everyone's shrubs.

The forecast has improved considerably - I just saw a whole string of days in the low 40's coming up next week. I'm torn though. I need snow to ski on, but it has been so cold that the electric company has been sending emails about how high our bills will be.  I can't wait - many records were broken with the extreme cold.

Comments

  1. Glad you got the skiing in--it doesn't look very crowded which is a plus. We have little snow here so our skiers and snowboarders are extremely frustrated. (especially if they've bought season passes) Warmer weather will be so much more comfortable and less limiting to your activities. People are complaining about power bills here; mine was in the $200s which is normal for this time of year. Of course, it hasn't been very cold either.

  2. Found you! If I just click on your name when you comment, it takes me to a page that looks like you have a Blogger account but no blog... Very mysterious. Anyway, hello. That looks VERY COLD! I've just Googled Gore Mountain and it's in New York State (you undoubtedly knew this, but I didn't). Here we've had more or less our first frost of the winter today. I don't think I could cope with being that cold, and definitely couldn't cope with skiing, but I'm impressed that you can!

  3. Believe me, this cold takes more and more effort to cope with each year. Taking up skiing again has helped because it's so much fun!
