Reckoning

3/11/24 Monday

The crocus have emerged.

I've been back home for 10 days, and I have been taking things very slowly to get my equilibrium back, both literally and metaphorically! I have been in low spirits as I worry about getting my tooth crowned - yet again, and my skin biopsy came back positive for basal cell carcinoma - again. So this month I am getting those taken care of - including another Moh's surgery on the 25th with a week of recovery. The only positive  aspect of that is, it is a mirror image of the last spot, so there will be some symmetry to the scars on my face.😏

My Dad's Steuben apple (I think he got it as a Corning Glass employee anniversary gift) now in a place of honor in my house. I decided to put it under more glass on a marble stand because I love my bell jar.

Mom's estate is quickly getting settled and my siblings are calming down their emotions over it all. I only took a few things from the house since my mother's style was very different from mine. Some things I thought would be sentimental only bring me sadness, (I'll offer them back to my siblings) and others I thought were trivial, make me very happy (the crocheted hot pot holder). Weird. The financial side of things will be settled soon too. Thank goodness I suggested she get a Living Revocable Trust soon after my Dad died. She set one up within that year and it makes the distribution process so much easier and quicker than a Will. I have to get my own set up this year too.

I went walking/hiking with the gals a few times, of which Friday was to celebrate Ann Marie's birthday. We ended that with dinner at Whitman's pub with cake and candles too.

Graphite Mine Preserve was a very pretty place to enjoy one of the nicest weather days. The mine entrances and building ruins are strewn about the place.

The Adirondack chairs placed throughout the preserve added to its charm.

Amyjean luxuriating in the sunshine!

I've walked and biked solo around home too, but winter is not letting go too easily. Some cold and blustery days like today, I just can't summon the will to go out in the windy cold. So I hop on the elliptical.

One of a dozen that hang out in the woods near home.

I'm starting to get my mojo back, and am getting things done, like my taxes. Cleaning out 27 years of clutter from my home is also back on the agenda, though I had to stop today as there is no more room in my garbage can. I'm also starting the process of changing my name back to its original one. It is long overdue.

3/12/24 Tuesday
Today's hike was at the Huyck Preserve in Rensselaerville. It was a challenge to us all as we shake off the winter malaise and try to get back into hiking shape.

Added another half mile because I forgot to turn on the app until we got to the lake.

Long exposure of the upper falls.

We stumbled upon the old cemetary off the trail.

The map was very useful, as we nearly lost the trail several times.

A resting spot.

Still ice on the lake and snow and ice covered trails.

The lower falls.

  1. Happy to hear you're getting back into your routines and exercise--and not suffering from too much vertigo. The crown and the Moh's--ugh. These procedures sound so tedious. I've had a couple crowns but no need for a root canal at least. I admire what you're getting done; I should be clearing out a bunch of stuff in my house and garage. Taxes are finished (at quite a cost) and I owed $142. :( Hope your weather gets more springlike. We're getting nice weather this weekend--near 70. I'll have to mow my lawn!
