Foiled By Weather And Tires

Not a good travel day, but hot chocolate for sure!

Rather than wait for my preferred tire store to open on Monday, I went to a chain store (Mavis) Sunday to plug the hole and slow leak caused by the screw. I was there at 9 when they opened but had to wait until 11:20 to get it fixed. Rather than head to Corning with a freezing rain and snow in the forecast, I went shopping at Target and put off the trip until the Monday. When I was almost home, the tire pressure warning light went on again! I drove right back to Mavis where they added air, and told me my tires were old and needed replacing. Of course they did. 😏

I decided to visit my trusted tire store in the morning to get their opinion.  Well, Monday morning I awoke to 6+ inches of snow (still falling) and 3-5 inches more expected throughout the day. After shoveling all morning, it was clear I wouldn't be getting to the tire store, much less traveling to Corning. At least my  upper body weight work is done for the day!

Luckily I motivated myself to take a five mile walk yesterday before the rain/snow began. I noticed that the town beach building was gone and a big hole was dug in its place. I guess the town will have a new bath house for the beach next summer. I headed into the woods for a little forest therapy, then snuggled in with a salad and Netflix.

New bath house?

Into the woods, listening to a podcast.

Monday morning, 8 am accumulation - 6 ".

11 am and still snowing.

It took me a couple of hours with several coffee/rest breaks to finish shoveling the driveway, then texting mom that I would not be traveling today.

Part 2

After lunch I wondered what to do with an unexpected day snowed in at home. Why not get in some snowshoeing? I got ready and set off for just a mile around the development since the snow plows hadn't gone through yet. I stopped to chat with several neighbors for a bit too long though, because the snow plow came through and rendered the snowshoes useless. I took them off at 3/4 of a mile and carried them home. Then I looked at the hill behind the house and decided to go past the water tower to the communications array. It was hard work climbing, as I was breaking trail, but I made it to the top. I stumbled upon a raft of 30 or so turkeys who were not pleased to see me. The woods were just so quiet and beautiful shrouded in snow.

Every branch was covered in snow - quite a magical scene.

Access road not plowed; perfect for snowshoes.

I made my way back home, shoveled the driveway, again, and called my outdoor time over. Annette came over for some hot chocolate and a chat, then I rejoined AAA as I may need road side assistance soon with my dodgy tire. My final chore was making a 13 x 9 pan of enchiladas to take to Corning as Mom  really can't cook any more.

There looks to be about 11" of new snow, but it's heavy and wet so will pack down rather quickly. The next snowstorm is already predicted for Wednesday! Hopefully I'll be able to get my tire looked at tomorrow morning and get off to Corning before more snow arrives.

  1. That's a LOT of snow! I admire your determination to get outside and exercise, in spite of that much accumulation. I usually try to take a walk around my neighborhood in the snow, unless I suspect ice. Then it's a no go. Good luck on the tires! I have my winter rated studless snow tires on my Subaru which makes it a beast in most weather conditions. February is usually our month for a snowstorm. We'll see though. We had the early storm in late November so that might be it. Fingers crossed! Enjoy the time with your mom.
