Hike to Bionnassey Glacier

 June 20, 2023

After the very well stocked breakfast buffet, we all met in the lobby to load up lunch ingredients into our packs and headed to the train station a short 5 minute walk away.

Waiting for the train in Chamonix. Hansel, Ann Marie, and Susan.

We rode to the town of Bionnassey where we caught a cable car up the mountain. We then hiked through forests and fields of wild flowers, a few cows and goats. Today's hike was 7 miles and 1200 ft of elevation which is an easy hike normally. This hike was hot and we had no cover from the sun.

We all were a bit surprised when we stopped for lunch in a clearing and just plopped down on the ground for a rustic picnic of bread, cheese, meats, and fruit. Somehow, the simple fare tasted delicious in this setting.

Wild flowers and fast flowing streams.

Hiking down some ankle breaking rocks,

This bridge was fun to cross.

A farm we walked through right before the uphill climb.

The last couple of miles were uphill and taxing. By the time we reached the cable car down, we all needed a rest in the lawn chairs where we spotted lots of avalanches up near the top of Mont Blanc.

The Mont Blanc Massif behind us.

Susan and me at the end of a very hot hike.

We descended the cable car, then caught a bus back to Chamonix. Our evening ritual then began: shower and rest, meet for drinks in the lobby, have dinner in the dining room, then off to town or our rooms.

I discovered I did not have access to my blog, or my bank, so I had to wait till the trip was over to write.

  1. The pictures and stories are worth waiting for. What an adventure! I never think of that area as being hot. I would have had all the wrong clothes!
