Jungfrau Excursion

July 8 - Into the Alps      (Note - I'm so behind but am setting a goal to post every day til I'm caught up.)

Bernese Oberland – Jungfraujoch

Copied from Bucher Travel's description with all the facts and figures:

This excursion takes you to the very heart of the Bernese Alps - the mighty "Eiger" (13'026 ft/ 3970m), "Mönch" (13'449 ft/ 4099m) and "Jungfrau" (13'643 ft./ 4158m), which form an imposing nucleus of the Alpine Region. Travel alongside Lake Lucerne to the ancient Celtic settlement of Alpnachstad, pass Lungern Lake and over the Bruenig Pass into the Aare valley with its shimmering Brienzer Lake, dominated by the Bernese Alps. Continue into the Waterfall Valley of Lauterbrunnen to see the cascading falls of StaubbachWalk to Interlaken Ost station and take the train into the Waterfall Valley of Lauterbrunnen where you change and board the train to Jungfraujoch. The travelling time from Interlaken to the Jungfraujoch is approx. 2 ½ hours each way. At Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe, you can visit the Ice Palace and the Sphinx Terraces - reached by lift affording breath taking view of the Aletsch Glacier, the largest river of ice in Europe. Descend to the mountaineering village of Grindelwald and on to Lucerne.

I'm guessing this was taken by Steve with his drone right before the picture below.

Our little travel group of 16 plus our driver and guide. So I don't forget, from left to right:
Tom C, Maureen C, Michael, Michelle, Dave,  Pat, Dan, Dale, Mary Elizabeth, Curt, me, Steve, Ken, Kathy, Janice, George, driver, and Joy.

On the way to the mountains.

Up at Junfraujoch, looking up the longest glacier - a thrill for my geologist self. The altitude really made me dizzy and shaky. I took it easy and didn't take too many pictures as I was just trying not to faint. That's what the altitude felt like to me - that uh-oh, I'm about to faint feeling. But not fainting, and the feeling didn't go away until I was on the gondola going down.

Looking down the mountain on the other side.

In the Ice Palace! I didn't realize I'd be IN the glacier until I started walking around. Yes, on ice! After gingerly walking so as not to fall, I just started sliding on purpose - it's a lot more fun.

Janice, Steve, and Dale in the gondola on the way down. It was a gorgeous ride.

Back in Lucerne for a final dinner and photo of the "Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Cleaning".
